Just before the famous Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312, the emperor Constantine witnessed a sign in the sky, a cross with next to it written “In this sign, you shall conquer”. The vision appeared before his final fight with the rival emperor Maxentius.

Born into a noble family in Venice in 1486, as a young man he was responsible for the defense of the fortress of Quero (Belluno) during the war against the League of Cambrai, the biggest conflict in Italy during the Renaissance. Despite a vigorous resistance, the fortress fell and he was captured.

The Madonna of Foligno, found today in the Vatican Pinacoteca, and the Sistine Madonna, conserved in Dresden, Saxony (Germany), were produced almost at the same time by Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio, 1483-1520). In 1511 Sigismondo de’ Conti, private and later political secretary to Pope Julius II, commissioned the artist to create a new altarpiece for Santa Maria in Aracoeli.

The name of Father Christopher Clavius, born in Bamberg, Bavaria (Germany) in 1537, is tied to a history of faith, mathematics and astronomy. Details regarding his early years are few. He entered the Jesuit order when he was 17. During his first visit to Rome, he was received by the actual founder of the Society of Jesus, Saint Ignatius of Loyola.
