Personalities- Antonio Mingote

Cartoonist, writer, journalist and academician, Antonio Mingote, was also an Honorary Postman of the Spanish post and is the character depicted in this stamp which pays tribute to this great master of humour.

Angel Antonio Mingote Barrachina was born in Sitges (Barcelona), in 1919, and died in Madrid in 2012. He spent his childhood between Daroca, Calatayud and Teruel. He was only 17 when he enlisted in the army during the Civil War and when the war came to an end, he studied two years of philosophy and language at the University of Zaragoza and from there joined the Infantry Academy of Guadalajara.

MONUMENTAL ARCHES AND GATES – Stamp Issue

The Macarena Arch or Gate, located in the neighbourhood of that name, and close to the Esperanza Macarena Basilica, is one of the entrances to the walled city of Seville. It has a unique arch topped with ceramic decoration of mainly classical design which was added after the original arch was built.The Alcalá Gate was commissioned by Carlos III from the Italian architect Sabatini. The construction is grandiose, in the neo-classical style, with five arches, the three semicircular central ones and the two lintel arches at the ends. This Madrid landmark is to be found in Independence Square.

Spain’s Latest stamp issue

The year 2011 has been officially declared as the Year of Spain in Russia and Russia in Spain and philately joins this event by issuing a commemorative stamp.

The idea of the Dual Year 2011 Spain-Russia came at the initiative of the Heads of Government of both countries during the International Conference held in the Russian city of Yaroslavl in September 2009.

Cathedral Nuestra Señora Commemorated On Spanish Stamps

The Cathedral Nuestra Señora de la Huerta de Tarazona, first called Nuestra Señora de Hidria, features in this souvenir sheet that depicts a side view of the temple with the dome over the transept, whilst the stamp features a panoramic view of the tower.

The building works began in 1162 but it wasn’t consecrated until 1235. During the reign of James I the Conqueror it was expanded and in the XIV century suffered significant damage during the War of the two Pedros. It was then rebuilt and underwent various changes over the centuries merging architectural elements of the Gothic, Renaissance and Moorish periods.
