Spanish Nature Reserve Parks

A set of three stamps featuring the most important nature reserves throughout Spain and the Iberian Peninsula has recently been issued. The stamps feature different photo montages of the different scenic locations. These locations are ‘The Sierra de Cazorla, The Garajonay National Park and the Parque de Dona Ana;

The Sierra de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park is located in the north-eastern part of the province of Jaén (Andalusia). It is the largest protected area in Spain and one of the largest in Europe. It was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1983 and also a Special Protection Area for migratory birds in 1988. Santiago de Compostela Walk on stamps

Spanish philately commemorates the Jubilee Year of Compostela or Xacobean Year with a stamp depicting the silhouette of a pilgrim facing the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

The Jubilee Year of Compostela was established in the 12th century and occurs whenever July 25th, feast day of the apostle St. James, falls on a Sunday. The cult of St. James originated when word spread that his remains were buried in the small Roman necropolis of Campo Stellae. A church was buried on the site and it soon became a pilgrimage centre on which a plenary indulgence could be earned. Santiago de Compostela, as Rome and Jerusalem, is one of the most important holy places for Christianity. (read more)

Famous ‘Gran Via’ in Madrid turns 100 years old

The Gran Vía is one of the main streets of Madrid from an urban planning, social, economic and cultural point of view and this year commemorates its 100 anniversary. It was on April 4th 1910 when king Alfonso XIII inaugurated the construction works.

In the mid 19th century, Madrid’s urban planners decided that a new thoroughfare had to be created, connecting the northeast to the city centre. However it wasn’t until 1861 when the Town Hall decided on building an alternative road to the congested Puerta del Sol with new open spaces and representative buildings. It wasn’t until 1866 that the project drafted by Carlos Velasco was approved and the first expropriations took place but the many difficulties that arose prevented the plan to be implemented. In 1895, the Ley de Saneamiento, Reforma y Ensanche Interior cleared the way for this project to come into force as it was declared of public utility. New Defintive stamps in Spain

This year’s definitive series is made up of four stamps depicting the portrait of King Juan Carlos I.

He is King of the Spanish people as he himself proclaimed on the 22nd November 1975. Defender of democracy and the constitutional values, the figure of Don Juan Carlos I as head of state is well known to all and he has always been very much aware of the social and cultural development of all regions. Spain celebrates the preseidency of the EU

The Post Office in Spain is celebrating Spain’s presidency of the EU with a set of two postage stamps.

During the first six months of 2010, Spain will preside over the EU and philately commemorates this event with two stamp issues.
