Australia Post celebrates the Year of the Dragon

What do Joan of Arc, Reese Witherspoon, Stephanie Gilmore and Salvador Dalí have in common? According to Chinese Astrology they were all born in the Year of the Dragon and are likely to be brave, tempestuous, powerful, wise and perfectionists.

The Dragon is considered the most enduring symbol of good fortune, and occupies a special place in the Chinese zodiac being the only mythical creature amongst 12 animals.

Australia Post mail truck fire

A large truck contracted by Australia Post to transport mail items from Perth to Brisbane over the weekend caught fire near Tweed Heads in New South Wales early on Sunday 18 December.

Unfortunately the fire totally destroyed the truck along with the contents which were parcels bound for Queensland. 

It took about an hour for the fire to be contained, luckily the driver escaped unharmed and there were no other injuries resulting from the fire.

Australia Post commemorates President Barack Obama’s visit to Australia

To mark the official Australian visit of the Honourable Barack Obama, President of the United States of America, Australia Post has released a domestic rate (60c) stamp, representing the longstanding Australia-United States Alliance under the ANZUS treaty.

During President Obama’s visit, he was presented with the framed souvenir stamp by Australian Prime Minister, the Honourable Julia Gillard.  (read more)

Australians can turn printer cartridges into pens during National Recycling Week

Australia Post helped tackle e-waste during Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week (November 7 – 13) by making it easy for Australians to recycle printer cartridges and mobile phones into everything from pens to jewellery at Australia Post outlets.

“E-waste is the most common form of rubbish in the world, we are seeing millions of printer cartridges end up in landfill each year,” said Australia Post General Manager External Affairs, Alex Twomey.  (read more)

Australia Post to release Remembrance Day commemorative stamps

Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the armistice which ended World War I (1914 – 1918), when Australians pause to honour our men and women who were injured, or lost their lives in service for our country.

An observance of silence was adopted on the first anniversary of armistice on 11 November 1919 by allied nations, and now honours all who have served and suffered in any military conflict or peace-keeping operation.  (read more)

Australia and Korea Year of Friendship is celebrated with a joint stamp issue

Australia and the Republic of Korea are marking 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries with the release of a joint stamp issue. This joint stamp release is a first between the two nations. The Australian stamps include a domestic rate (60c) stamp and an international rate ($1.65) stamp. The Korean stamps have their own denominations.

“Australia and South Korea have formed a significant bond since the Korean War. We’re delighted to be releasing a joint stamp issue in this special Year of Friendship,” said Australia Post Philatelic Manager, Mr Michael Zsolt. “We worked closely with Korea Post and hope this joint stamp issue further demonstrates Australia’s growing relationship with South Korea.”

Australia Post warns of “parcel delivery phone call” scam

Australia Post is alerting customers to an unsolicited phone call scam which claims that a parcel could not be delivered to the recipient and that redelivery can be arranged after a payment is made.

The scammer may present themselves as an employee of Australia Post or staff member from one of our retail outlets. The scammer will provide a reason as to why delivery has failed (e.g. parcel too large) and advise that with a payment, delivery can occur.

Australia Post will never call customers to request payment for an undeliverable mail item.

Australia stamps celebrate Christmas

This year’s Christmas issue includes two stamps with a religious theme and three that focus on the more secular elements of Christmas.

The beautiful religious stamps show two episodes from the Biblical story. In the 55c stamp the Virgin Mary, dressed in her traditional deep blue robe, gazes tenderly at the newborn baby Jesus. In the $1.50 stamp, the three Kings or Wise Men, Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar, are shown journeying from the east to Bethlehem in order to worship the Christ Child. They are dressed in rich robes as befi ts their royal station. The guiding star can be seen in the night sky.

The three secular stamps offer an alternative to those who celebrate the festive season (read more)

Australia Post honours CHOGM 2011 in Perth with new stamp

Australia Post is marking the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) to be held in Perth, Western Australia in October 2011 with the release of a domestic rate (60c) stamp. The stamp issue is available 18 October 2011.

Australia Post results show business stabilised but challenges still ahead

Australia Post today announced that following the launch of its business renewal program Future Ready last year, it has achieved the objective of stabilising the business with a pre-tax profit of $332.3 million, up from $253 million (before restructuring provisions) in 2009-10.

Australia Post Chairman, David Mortimer, said the result was impressive at a time when many other postal services around the world faced precarious financial positions and were implementing significant service cuts. 

“This profit result is particularly encouraging given letter volumes for our reserved service fell by more than 3 per cent for the fourth year in a row, resulting in a loss of $91.3 million for the reserved service mail business,” said Mr Mortimer.
