Gibraltar’s Superb Barbary Macaques Issue
VN:F [1.9.1_1087]

Although not strictly speaking correct, the Barbary macaque is traditionally called an ape, since it resembles one in having almost no tail. Barbary macaques (scientific name, Macaca sylvanus) are Old World primates belonging to the family Cercopithecidae. In addition to the Barbary and other macaques, this family also comprises baboons, guenons and langurs. The members of this family share several skeletal features, such as a narrow nose, hindlimbs longer than the forelimbs, and a tail (when present) that is not prehensile. Due to other anatomical features mainly related to dietary adaptations, this family is divided into two subfamilies. The macaques belong to the subfamily called Cercopithecinae. One of the characteristic features of this subfamily is the presence of cheek pouches in which the animals store food.

Scenic stamps from Jersey Post
VN:F [1.9.1_1087]

Scenery is consistently a popular theme with collectors of stamps; today , Jersey Post will issue the third set of six stamps in the ‘Scenery’ series. In keeping with the previous issues, the style alludes to traditional picture postcards and a long ‘landscape’ format is used.
Philatelic Researcher, Mrs Melanie Gouzinis, explains “We learnt from our 2009 customer survey, that stamp collectors particularly like to see our island depicted on stamps. Luckily we have a seemingly endless choice of landscapes to choose from.” Those which are shown on the new set of stamps are: Beauport, St Ouen’s bay, Ouaisné Common, St Brelade’s Bay, Mont Orgueil and Portelet. Faroes Islands Sepac 2011 Landscape Issue
VN:F [1.9.1_1087]

Landscape photography is universally appreciated by all, in part because all humans have a connection to the physical world our ancestors have walked for millennia. Of course, this connection to the environment in which we live is felt stronger by some, especially by outdoor photographers and by people who live more dependently off the land. The Faroese people, for example, have this deeper connection to the natural world; it is inescapable and unforgettable wherever one goes among the Faroe Islands. There are no big cities to get mentally lost in and forget about what lies beyond – only picturesque villages in idyllic settings nestled along the ocean and backed by mountains. (read more)

Scenery stamp series completed with Kökar and Jomala stamps
VN:F [1.9.1_1087]

The time has come to complete the Åland scenery series. The final two municipalities to be featured are the archipelago municipality of Kökar and Åland’s largest municipality, Jomala. All 16 Åland municipalities will then have been presented and a beautiful pack holding the 16 scenery stamps will also be available.
Kökar is an island situated in the outskirts of the Åland archipelago and the southern-most Åland municipality. Kökar is a popular place for tourists to visit. Many come here to visit the Otterböte Bronze Age site, an ancient settlement for seal hunters. Best known among the sights in Kökar is the island of Källskär. Despite its broken landscape and exposed position, the island has been creatively developed with a harbour, several buildings and a lovely garden. Tove Jansson’s painting, featured on a 2007 stamp, was previously on display on Källskär. This is also where the Pitcher of Källskär can be admired, a nature phenomenon formed by the rotation of large boulders in the whirls of glacier waters running under the ice. (read more)
