A loyal Japanese member of the postal service The strangest thing is that the writer of these words is the same age as a long-standing and loyal Japanese member of the Faroese postal service. The Japanese referred to here is a “Suzuki”. Anyone with the slightest knowledge of cars knows that Suzuki is a Japanese car manufacturer.

The brown rat is larger than the black rat and the male is larger than the female. An adult brown rat weighs around 200-400 g and is approx. 21-29 cm long, with a tail length of approx. 17-23 cm.

Most beautiful SEPAC stamp winner is Faroes

The vote for the most beautiful 2011 SEPAC stamp has been decided.  The Faroese stamp “Drangurin i Sundinum” won an overwhelming victory with 50.5 per cent of the votes,. The Åland Islands placed second with 11 per cent of the votes, while Iceland and Guernsey shared the third place with 8.2 per cent of the votes.

”Margarinfabrikkin” – Tórshavn Youth Centre was commissioned to design postage stamps for 2012 with the theme “Street Art”. The result was these four drawings by the two young girls, Saga Kapna and Laura Edit Tórhalsdóttir, who together call themselves “Nadedita”.

The old folklore often deals with issues on the borders between the known universe and a threatening outher world which people feared – or between right and wrong, defined by secular regulation and laws or by common tradition.

The conceptions about the ”Niðagrísur” (The Child Ghost) derive from a serious crime. The fact that the ”Grýla” (The Monster) goes for the children, derives from the need to observe ecclesiastical orders. The Beach Trolls keep the children away from the beach and thereby great danger – and the conceptions about the Mare is a symtom of physical and mental stress, which most people experience during their lifetime.

Animals of the Viking Age- Stamp issue

The Great Auk was a bird of the genus Alca, which also includes the Little Auk, Common Murre, Razor Bill and Atlantic Puffin. All of these species live or lived in the North Atlantic. The Great Auk was the largest of these birds and could grow up to 70 cm in height. Some of the other Alca birds had bright or whitish abdomens and dark-black backs, with a characteristic white spot on each side of the head, between the eyes and eye socket. They were flightless birds, with wings that were as small as the South Atlantic penguin. It was fast in the water when hunting fish but very clumsy on land.
