The Monaco Grand Prix was inaugurated by Prince Pierre in 1929. There have been periods when the event was not held, for example during the Second World War. Since 1955, it has taken place each year and is still one of the most eagerly awaited highlights of the Formula 1 Championships. The 70th Monaco Grand Prix will be held from 24th to 27th May 2012.

75th Bazaar in aid of L’oeuvre de soeur Marie- Stamp issue

The Work of Sister Mary, which is presided over by H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover, is a Monegasque association that offers assistance to the elderly poor. The 75th traditional bazaar, which is organized by the association as a fund-raising event, will be held in March 2012. The stamp features a drawing by Karl Lagerfeld, which he designed especially for the charity. This issue will be on sale at the “Office des Emissions de Timbres-Poste”, the “Musée des Timbres et des Monnaies”, the post offices and philatelic counters of the Principality, the Monaco stamp-dealers as well as some philatelic counters in France.

Centenary of La Carabine de Monaco (Monaco rifle shooting) Stamp issue

La Carabine de Monaco was established in 1912, and its creation marked the beginnings of the sport of shooting in the Principality. The first rifle range was situated on the Rock and was inaugurated in 1920. In 1994, a new, ultra-modern range of more than 4,000 m2 was built in the centre of the Fontvieille district. Monegasque competitors regularly take part in all kinds of shooting events at the Olympic Games.

500th Anniversary of Monaco’s independence and sovereignty

On 20th February 1512, following a request by Lucien Grimaldi, the King of France, Louis XII, delivered letters patent to him containing an evocative phrase, stating that the lord of Monaco only held his land “from God and by the sword.” In this lies the solemn recognition of the sovereignty of Monaco.

Monaco’s International Dog Show Stamp Issue

The next International Dog Show, organised by the Monaco Kennel Club, will take place on 27th and 28thApril 2012. This year, the focus is on the Collie. The stamp features a tri-colour Collie that shows all the most desirable characteristics of this breed, i.e. expressive eyes and balance of the skull and muzzle.

The Frescoes of the Salle Garnier, Monte-Carlo Opera Stamp Issue

The Monte-Carlo Opera House was designed and created by Charles Garnier in 1878 and inaugurated in 1879. The vaulted ceiling is adorned with four painted canvas panels measuring 15 metres by 6 metres: “Music” by Gustave Boulanger is situated above the stage, while “Comedy” by Frédéric Lix is on the side facing the sea. “Dance” by Georges Clairin, on the left side of the room, portrays all kinds of dancing, and depicts some most primitive and unusual costumes. “Song and Eloquence,” above the Prince’s box, expresses the painter François Feyen – Perrin’s poetic and melancholic character.

Les Jardins Saint-Martin Stamp Issue From Monaco Post

Les jardins Saint-Martin (Saint Martin’s Gardens) were the first public gardens to be created in Monaco. They were set out in the reign of Prince Honoré V, and cling to the south-eastern face of the Rock. They offer some lovely walks along winding paths through the lush Mediterranean flora.
