Producing the Alderney Harbour issue has given us the pleasure of getting to know former Harbourmaster Steve Shaw, who retired in June after 25 years in the position. The Island’s longest-serving Harbourmaster, Steve came to Alderney with a diving team in the early 1970s.

Alderney’s 200th Anniversary of Charles Dickens Stamps

Charles Dickens is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated authors of all time.  His appeal shows no signs of fading more than 140 years after his death, with his books remaining in print all around the world.

Alderney have chosen to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens with stamps depicting original illustrations from Oliver Twist by George Cruikshank (1792-1878), one of the artists with whom Dickens personally collaborated.

On her tragic maiden voyage, more than 1,500 people died when the “practically unsinkable” ship hit an iceberg and sank on 15 April 1912. Much has been written about the ship, its passengers and those who survived the disaster.  Here, we take a look at some of the facts, as well as the myth and legend surrounding the Titanic. Some of the most important ice warnings didn’t reach the Titanic’s bridge on 14 April 1912.

Alderney’s Winter Wonderland Christmas Stamps

It was Christmas Eve and Alderney had woken up to a magical stillness and hush. As the Islanders pulled open their curtains, a blank canvas awaited them to be filled with festive fun. Victoria Street was a scene from a Dickens’ novel, its cobbles sugar-iced in snow and its street lamps casting pools of golden light against the colour-washed houses.

Down at the harbour, the still waters looked like a skating pond, snow formed into drifts beside the quays and the colours of the fishing boats faded away like old photographs.

Stamps Celebrate Centenary of British Red Cross Uniform

Guernsey Stamps is delighted to announce the release of six stamps to celebrate the centenary year of the uniform of the British Red Cross, an organisation which began in 1870.

Illustrated by Robin Cook, the collection begins with the 36p stamp which reflects the year c1911. During this time British Red Cross volunteers worked as part of the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) scheme and were given official uniforms such as the red dress and stiff cuffs worn by Nursing Commandants, as the stamp depicts.

Queen Elizabeth 85th / Prince Philip’s 90th Stamp Issue by Alderney Post

2011 is a special year for the Royal Family, with the celebration of the 85th birthday of Her Majesty The Queen, who has reigned for over five decades, and the 90th birthday of her husband, His Royal Highness Prince Philip. Although the Queen was born on 21 April, the tradition is for Her Majesty to celebrate her birthday on a Saturday in June – an event which is officially marked by Trooping the Colour. We have compiled some fascinating facts about this spectacular event, which this year takes place on 11 June:- •The Queen has attended Trooping the Colour every year of her reign, apart from 1955 when the event was cancelled due to a national rail strike.
