Christmas Stamp 2012 – Stamp Issue
VN:F [1.9.1_1087]

The Inuit girls came to life in Copenhagen. Without access to the atelier where I create my large works, I rode my bicycle to the art shop to explore a bit. A large watercolour pad and a new paintbox with stylish intense colours was the result. Then I wrapped myself up in a world of shapes, colours and red pouts. The Inuit girls are more stylised than my other works. With diligence each stroke needs to work from the beginning. There can be no alterations with watercolour paint. The Inuit girls are both a play of shape and colour, but they are also a work of patience with diligent precision. If the proportions are a little out of balance the faces will immediately become strange. So these pretty Inuit ladies take their time for the ball – but then the festivities begin. I am very mindful of the balance between something, which is recognisable from traditional Greenlandic culture like the pearl collar, skin collar, the hair bound in a bun and the kamiks. But, at the same time, I liberate the girls from too many restrictions. They are free to play with dresses, can-can skirts, bows and whatever gives them a fantasy world with free range to thrive in. It is colourful. A happy and light universe. On the Christmas stamps there are no dresses. Christmas is a time for tradition. So I have played with something simpler and been christmassy with colours, which contrasts with the white background or snow if you wish. On one of the stamps the two friends stroll along. They walk arm in arm. The pearl necklaces intertwine and lead up to a Christmas tree. Below, the girls red kamiks reveal themselves. On the other Christmas stamp you get a closer look at the bauble on the Christmas tree with happy waving Inuit girls. Like in the Christmas greetings, Greenlandic flags hang and decorate both stamps, so no one can doubt from where the Christmas greeting comes.
