The Irish Prison Service (IPS) is a key arm of the criminal justice system. It encompasses fourteen institutions which deal with male offenders from 17 years of age, and female offenders aged 18 or over. Its mission is to provide safe and secure custody as well as dignity of care and rehabilitation to prisoners. It also seeks to make a positive contribution to public safety and to provide a safer community for all through a prison service firmly grounded in respect for human dignity. (read more)

The Irish Citizen Army (Arm Cathartha na hÉireann in Irish), or ICA, was a small group of trained trade union volunteers established in Dublin during the great strike of the Irish Transport and General Workers Union in 1913, known as the Lockout of 1913. The Lockout caused most of Dublin to come to an economic standstill and was marked by vicious rioting between the strikers and the Dublin Metropolitan Police.
