Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the First Air Mail, Australia Post has Issued a Stamp Edition!

An Australian postage milestone was made in July 1914. French aviator Maurice Guillaux took off from Melbourne Agricultural Grounds on 16 July bound for Sydney, with a cargo of souvenir postcards, official letters and a small number of parcels. Guillaux’s load was light, as his Bleriot XI monoplane was only powered by a Gnôme rotary engine of around 50 horse power. A century ago, Australia’s stamp designs were “hot” political topics. Labor PostmasterGeneral, Charles Frazer developed the Kangaroo and Map design, but a few months later, his successor, the Liberal’s Agar Wynne, made plans to scrap it in favour of stamps featuring the monarch, King George V. Christmas Island National Park – Issued by Australia Post!

Christmas Island is a place of much natural beauty and scientific interest. This peak of a submarine mountain rises to a central plateau at about 360 metres above sea level. It is fringed by an almost continuous rocky cliff that rises to an average of 10–20 metres, broken in about a dozen places by shallow bays and small beaches.
