Ireland celebrates St Patrick’s day

St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland is one of Christianity’s most widely known figures. He was born in Britain to wealthy parents near the end of the fourth century. At the age of 16, Patrick was taken prisoner and transported to Ireland where he spent 6 years in captivity. During this time he worked as a shepherd before later escaping back to Britain.
One night he had a dream of a visit from an angel. The dream had such a profound impact on him that he returned to Ireland as a missionary where he worked to convert Irish people to Christianity. (read more)

Tennis star Federer on stamps

Roger Federer was born on 8 August 1981, the son of a Swiss father and a South African mother, and grew up in the Basel suburbs of Riehen and Münchensteinauf. His mother’s origin explains Federer’s English pronunciation of his given name, which is not the typical French pronunciation that would be usual in Switzerland. He began to play tennis at the tender age of three, joining his first major club, ironically the “TC Old Boys” at the age of eight. (read more)

Six well-known Finnish women got stamp booklet on The International Women’s Day 2010.
These women work on science, art and culture. Professors Elina Haavio-Mannila (sociology), Laila Hirvisaari(author) and Leena Palotie (geneticist); Maria-Liisa Nevala, Director of the Finnish National Theatre, Aira Samulin, Dance teacher and designer Ritva Liisa Pohjalainen are the women depicted in the stamp booklet. Distinguished Sailors Saluted On Stamps

Four revered U.S. Navy icons were commemorated with a First-Class salute with the dedication of the Distinguished Sailors collectable stamps. Available nationwide today, the 44-cent stamps immortalize four sailors who served with bravery and distinction during the 20th Century: William S. Sims, Arleigh A. Burke, John McCloy and Doris “Dorie” Miller.
The dedication ceremony took place at the United States Navy Memorial in Washington, DC. “On behalf of the U.S. Postal Service, I am pleased to honor these four great sailors who impacted our nation and world,” said Potter. (read more)

Darwin’s 200

The Gibraltar Cahrles Darwin stamps have been issued with the assistance of the University of Cambridge. All the images on the stamps are originals from Mr CHarles Darwin’s book published 150 years ago. The stamps designs are very elegant and were designed by Gibraltarian graphic artist Stephen Perera (BA Hons)
