Christmas Island is covered with lush green vegetation and is notable for its flora and fauna. It is home to around 411 plant species, of which 213 are native and about 18 endemic.

Christmas Island year of the Snake 2013!

The Snake is the sixth sign in the Chinese zodiac and it symbolises wisdom, caution and romance. The stamps feature the calligraphic symbol for the Snake and its pictorial derivation.

Located in the Indian Ocean some 2,600 kilometres north-west of Perth, Christmas Island is the sole peak of an underwater mountain range to rise above the ocean’s surface. The island was named by Captain William Mynors, who sailed the Royal Mary past it on Christmas Day 1643.
