Swedish artist, musician, painter, speech and singing therapist and choirmaster Caroline af Ugglas finds relaxation at her summer cottage in Aland. She gives her personal view of Aland as artist for the My Aland stamp.
The My Aland stamp theme is a recurring theme offering celebrities with a connection to Aland an opportunity to illustrate their opinion of the Aland province and personal view of Aland. Lill Lindfors, Mauno Koivisto, Mark Levengood, Björn Borg, Martti Ahtisaari, Ake Lindman and Marcus Grönholm are all previous artists for this series of stamps. In 2012, Caroline af Ugglas is in turn.

Torbjörn Östman’s first stamps for Åland Post depicted 3 different insects. When he now reappears as a stamp designer, his commission has been to feature a blood-red Ruddy Darter and a bluish-green Southern Hawker.

Statue honours seafarers Raised in 1936 as a memorial to those seafarers who perished at sea, the statue ‘The man at the wheel’ is the oldest outdoor piece of art in Mariehamn. Åland Post now issues an engraved stamp featuring the well-known statue.

Past themes have included gastronomy, forests and children’s books but 2012 theme is ‘Visit’.

Part two of the Nordic series the North by the Sea features the actual life at sea. Åland’s contribution to the series shows professional fishermen trawling from a fishing boat. Since the dawn of time, fishing has been an important Åland industry.

2012 sees the start of a new theme for Åland franking labels. Reputable stamp artist Juha Pykäläinen was commissioned to illustrate old wooden duck decoys; first out is the eider duck.

The next two passenger ferries in turn to be presented on Åland stamps are S/S Birger Jarl and M/S Sally Albatross. These are ferries number seven and eight in a series of twelve ferry stamps.

Like in 2011, Aland’s new stamp issuing year starts with the issue of a new motif for franking labels. The new series featuring old wooden duck decoys by artist Juha Pykäläinen appears on 1 February, and the first duck out is the eider. On the same day, two new passenger ferries appear on stamps, namely S/S Birger Jarl and M/S Sally Albatross. These two ferries were designed by artist Håkan Sjöström who also designed the previous ferry stamps. (read more)
