Fighter plane IK-2, was designed by engineers Ljubomir Ilić and Kosta Suvčev, who designated their project IK (I for Ilić, and K for Kosta).

It was the first Yugoslav all metal aircraft, the first fighter and the first plane armed by cannon, built in the country.

Manufactoring of IK-L1 (L meaning lovac, fighter, 1 single seater) was initiated at Aicraft Factory „Ikarus“, and maiden flight was performed on April 22^nd, 1935. During third test flight prototype was lost in accident, caused by technical failer of wing cloth covering. „Ikarus“ built the second, improved prototype, first flight on August 24^th, which, durung tests achieved maximal air speed of 435 kmph, then the fastest nonretracting wheels aircraft in Europe. In 1937 to the Air Force were delivered 12 series planes IK-2.
