Old Planes – Ikarus IK-2 – Stamp Issue

Fighter plane IK-2, was designed by engineers Ljubomir Ilić and Kosta Suvčev, who designated their project IK (I for Ilić, and K for Kosta).
It was the first Yugoslav all metal aircraft, the first fighter and the first plane armed by cannon, built in the country.
Manufactoring of IK-L1 (L meaning lovac, fighter, 1 single seater) was initiated at Aicraft Factory „Ikarus“, and maiden flight was performed on April 22nd, 1935. During third test flight prototype was lost in accident, caused by technical failer of wing cloth covering. „Ikarus“ built the second, improved prototype, first flight on August 24th, which, durung tests achieved maximal air speed of 435 kmph, then the fastest nonretracting wheels aircraft in Europe. In 1937 to the Air Force were delivered 12 series planes IK-2.
