On the 1st July Monaco will be issuing four new stamps. In their customary elegant style, the stamps will commemorate important events as follows; 

50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE MARITIME POLICE OF MONACO

The Maritime and Airport Police Division (D.P.M.A.- Division de Police Maritime et Aéroportuaire) was created by Sovereign Order of 16 August 1960. The D.P.M.A. today has about forty civil servants. The stamp illustrates the vessels successively assigned to the Division: the launch “Grace Patricia”, in service from 1961 to 1970, and the current launch “Vigilante” of 18 metres in length

BICENTENARY OF CANNING

Nicolas Appert gave his name to his invention: l’appertisation (canning). In 1795, this French chef and confectioner in Paris discovered a revolutionary method of conserving food by enclosing it in hermetically sealed containers (glass bottles and then tin boxes). In 1802 Appert established in Massy, the first canning factory in the world. In 1810 he waived the right to register a patent and made his invention public.

ANNIVERSARY OF THE INVENTION OF THE GAS ENGINE

Born in 1822 in Mussy-la-Ville, Jean-Joseph Etienne Lenoir was the first to successfully develop, in 1860, an engine functioning in accordance with the principle of internal combustion. Originally, this two-stroke engine was fuelled with lighting gas. Lenoir later invented a carburettor to replace the gas with petrol. In 1863, he installed this engine in his car and travelled 18 km from Paris to Joinville-le-Pont in 3 hours.

THE “LITTLE AFRICA” GARDEN Uphill above the Casino, the “Little Africa” garden, with exuberant essences and exotic vegetables, skirts the Boulingrins garden and its magnificent water fountains, both designed by the French landscaper and botanist Edouard André at the end of the 19th century.
