POST Greenland Issues the first seven Stamps of the Year
Contemporary Greenlandic visual art, children’s books, acting and aviation. The themes of the seven stamps issued by POST Greenland on 18th January cover a wide range. The main theme of the seven stamps is: The Role of Modern Greenland in a globalized world. Two of the five artists behind the stamps make their début as stamp artists.
“Contemporary Greenlandic Art”, Part IV
The fourth part of POST Greenland ’s series ‘Contemporary Greenlandic Art’ displays the artworks of the three up-and-coming Greenlandic artists: Maria Panínguak’ Kjærulff, Miki Jacobsen and Bolatta Silis-Høegh. With this issue both Maria and Bolatta receive their baptism of fire as stamps artists, while Miki has more practice working in stamp dimension with its many built-in possibilities and limits. The stamps are printed in offset and are issued in the large E-size (50 x 43.50 mm ). They are issued in normal sheets as well as in a beautiful folder, in which one copy of each of three stamps is included.
“Children’s books” – the common theme of this year’s EUROPA stamps
Author, photographer and visual artist Julie Edel Hardenberg was in many ways a natural choice when POST Greenland was looking for two designs for this year’s Greenland stamps in the popular EUROPA series. Because Julie Edel Hardenberg is an author of children’s books herself. The stamps are printed in offset, and are issued in normal sheets of 50 stamps, in mini sheets of 8 stamps, as well as a self-adhesive stamp booklet with 2 x 6 stamps.
Additional value 2010 benefits the theatre group SILAMIUT
Greenlandic stage art is essential to our self-knowledge. In 2009 Greenland ’s most characteristic theatre group, Silamiut, celebrated its 25th anniversary. Today, Silamiut, based in Nuuk, is run as a project theatre without a permanent staff of technicians and actors. The whole additional value of 0.50 DKK per sold stamp will go to Silamiut. Bolatta Silis-Høegh has created a most evocative expression of stage art seen with Greenlandic eyes. The stamps are printed in offset and are issued in normal sheets of 40 stamps and in a beautiful souvenir sheet.
Air Greenland ’s 50th anniversary
For more than a generation Air Greenland has facilitated in transporting people to and around in Greenland . This year we celebrate the 50th anniversary since the company first operated aircraft in Greenland . Grønlandsfly, (Air Greenland) as the company was originally called, was created against a tragic background. It was the sinking of the ship Hans Hedtoft south of Cape Farewell in 1959, which became the direct reason for establishing a special Greenlandic ice recognisance service to avoid further clashes with giant icebergs.
Soon thereafter, freight and passenger transportation became the very central element in Air Greenland’s services. Ina Rosing has created the beautiful stamp, printed in offset and issued in normal sheets of 40 stamps.
Dorit Olsen has created the typography on all seven stamps.
