Mother Theresa honoured by Monaco

A joint issue between Israel – Vatican in 2011?

According to several news sources, after Pope Benedict XVI had been presented with an official set of postage stamps, issued by the Philatelic Service of the Israel Postal Company, to commemorate his historic pilgrimage to the Holy Land during May 2009, the possibility of a joint issue between both Israel and Vatican was discussed. .
The Holy Father received a framed copy personalised stamps and special commemorative souvenir booklets dedicated to his visit.
His Excellency the pope then met at a later date ith the Israeli delegation at the end of his weekly General Audience, in St Peter’s Square in which the idea was mentioned. The project is still under discussion and could happen during 2011.

Famous ‘Gran Via’ in Madrid turns 100 years old

The Gran Vía is one of the main streets of Madrid from an urban planning, social, economic and cultural point of view and this year commemorates its 100 anniversary. It was on April 4th 1910 when king Alfonso XIII inaugurated the construction works.
In the mid 19th century, Madrid’s urban planners decided that a new thoroughfare had to be created, connecting the northeast to the city centre. However it wasn’t until 1861 when the Town Hall decided on building an alternative road to the congested Puerta del Sol with new open spaces and representative buildings. It wasn’t until 1866 that the project drafted by Carlos Velasco was approved and the first expropriations took place but the many difficulties that arose prevented the plan to be implemented. In 1895, the Ley de Saneamiento, Reforma y Ensanche Interior cleared the way for this project to come into force as it was declared of public utility. Three years later, with the Count of

A postage stamp has been issued by Israel to paytribut to the victims of the September 11th attacks
On September 11th 2001, four passenger jets were hijacked and crashed into the World Trade Center, New York City, the Pentagon,Washington DC, and an open field in Pennsylvania. The world watched in horror as the World Trade Center collapsed on those inside and on the rescuers who charged in bravely, against all odds to save lives. By the time the smoke dispersed and the dust settled, the death toll reached almost 3,000.
