Britain’s rarest stamp is now on offer

All those lucky enough to be able to attend the 2010 London World Stamp Show will have the wonderful opportunity to view on display an example of the Edward VII 6d. purple overprinted I.I Official. This magnificent stamp will be on display at the Gibbons stand (No 79) so make sure to pay them a visit.

As you probably already knew, the stamp was issued on the 14th March 1904 and that was coincidentally the day that the order came to immediately withdrw all offiials from use thus making this stamp the rarest of all British Stamps. (read more)

Bird of the year stamps

The Estonian Ornithological Society picked has two species of shrikes, the red-back shrike (Lanius collurio) and the great grey shrike (Lanius excubitor), as birds of the year 2010.

The birds have a long tail and a strong hooked beak. The male shrike has a typical black eye mask. The red-back shrike is slightly larger than the sparrow while the great grey shrike is about the size of a small thrush. Shrikes can be seen in open and semi-open landscapes. Santiago de Compostela Walk on stamps

Spanish philately commemorates the Jubilee Year of Compostela or Xacobean Year with a stamp depicting the silhouette of a pilgrim facing the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

The Jubilee Year of Compostela was established in the 12th century and occurs whenever July 25th, feast day of the apostle St. James, falls on a Sunday. The cult of St. James originated when word spread that his remains were buried in the small Roman necropolis of Campo Stellae. A church was buried on the site and it soon became a pilgrimage centre on which a plenary indulgence could be earned. Santiago de Compostela, as Rome and Jerusalem, is one of the most important holy places for Christianity. (read more)

Canada and Sweden produce a marine life Joint Issue

Canada post and Sweden post will release a Joint issue on the 13th May 2010 commemorating Marine Life. The stamps have been issued as a se-tenant pair of stamps, which depict sea otters. They have been designed by a freelance Swedish designer Martin Morck and were engraved by the Swedish engraver Lars Sjooblom. (read more)

Inter-School Stamp Exhibits Competition

Hong Post must be applauded for promoting stamps at schools in previous years but their new initiative of organising a school stamp exhibit competition goes even further and in a way guarantees the future of philatelic competition in Asia and hopefully worldwide.

Hongkong Post today (May 3) announced that the exhibition of the winners and entries of the 11th Inter-School Stamp Exhibits Competition will be held at Sky Dome Atrium, Discovery Park, Tsuen Wan, from May 14 to 16. (read more)

One Planet One Ocean

A magnificent set will be issued by the UN on the 6th May 2010, the United Nations Postal Administration will issue six se-tenant mini-sheets of four stamps each (for a total of 24 commemorative stamps) on the theme “One Planet, One Ocean”, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the International Oceanographic Commission (IOC). The Thai Airways International Public Company Limited, whose inaugural flight was on May 1st, 1960, has served as both a domestic and international airline. International Stamp Printers ‘Thai British’ have a world premiere in stamp printing technology, a new 100 % recycled Tropimatic “Green” 100 stamp paper which represent a significant step forward.

This ecological paper is manufactured from blank wastes which means it has not been printed with potential polluting inks needing chemical treatment for recycling. Since the novel was first published in the late nineteenth century, Johanna Spyri’s character Heidi has been a true international hit and has had a lasting impact on the image of Switzerland.
