JOBURG 2010 World Stamp Expo

South Africa will be holding their third International stamp exhibition from the 27th to 31st October 2010. It will be held in the Sandton International Convention Centre, which is located in the heart of a mega shopping mall in Johannesburg.
The location has specifically been chosen to create more interest and increase the profile for philately. Further information on the show can be found via the following website. www.joburg2010stampshow.co.za
South Africa has had a number of International Events during recent years such as the Miss World Competition and the forthcoming World Cup. The Stamp Show promises to be a great success with a lot of efforts being made by all the rganising comittee.

First ever philatelic exhibition on wheels

The first ever philatelic exhibition on wheels was inaugurated at Chennai Central here on Tuesday.
This is the first time in the history of Indian Railways that such an event is being organised. The stamps on display have been collected by one person: Mohamed Mujibullah of Eastern Railways.
The exhibition train, comprising three AC coaches, portray important developments in Indian Railways such as horse-drawn carriages, birth of steam locomotives, emergence of metro rail, monorail, superfasttrains, rolling stock, important and heritage railway stations, signals, bridges, tracks, tunnels, mountain railways, railway ferries, mail trains, Railway Mail Service and railway centenaries. Commemorative stamps album for Shanghai 2010 World Expo

The stamp album to commemorate the Shanghai World Expo, named “Wonderful Shanghai Expo, World’s precious stamps”, was published by China National Philatelic Corporation and issued in Beijing recently.
The album has limited editions of 8,000 worldwide.
“As an important component of the culture of the World Expo, the stamps have been accompanying each Expo and witnessing the development of the World Expos since their born in 1893,” Liu Mingyan, general manager of the China National Philatelic Corporation said. (read more)

Portugal World Stamp Show will promote phiately to children

Children are no doubt the future of the hobby so all of us as collectors need to encourage our children and grandchildren to discover the fun and interest of stamp collecting.
Attracting young people to the grounds of PORTUGAL 2010 – World Philatelic Exhibition is a major objective of the Organizing Committee of the exhibition.

The Penny Black (wikipedia)

The Penny Black was the world’s first adhesive postage stamp used in a public postal system. It was issued by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland on 1 May, 1840, for use from 6 May of that year. All London post offices received official issues of the new stamps but other offices throughout the United Kingdom did not, continuing to accept postage payments in cash only for a period. Post offices such as those in Bath, began offering the stamp unofficially after 2 May.
History
The idea of an adhesive stamp to indicate pre-payment of postage was part of Sir Rowland Hill’s 1837 proposals to reform the British postal system; it was normal then for the recipient to pay postage on delivery. A companion idea, which Hill disclosed on 13 February 1837 at a government enquiry, was that of a separate sheet that folded to form an enclosure or envelope for carrying letters.

Portugal gets ready for the 2010 World Expo

Only three major International Philatelic Exhibitions have taken place in Portugal since 1910, the year in which the Republic was established: PORTUGAL 1953; PORTUGAL 1998; and LUBRAPEX 2003.
In 2010, the Portuguese Post Office and the Portuguese Philatelic Federation will renew their century-old association by inviting all philatelists and stamp collectors, stamp dealers and everyone generally interested in philately throughout the world, to set aside a few days at the beginning of October to visit Portugal and contribute to the success of PORTUGAL 2010 – World Philatelic Exhibition. Philatelic Certificates, a must for the serious collector

Philatelic expertisation is the process whereby an expert is asked to give an opinion whether a philatelic item is genuine and whether it has been repaired or altered in any way.
Forging and faking of stamps is common in the philatelic marketplace and increasingly buyers demand an expert certificate before buying a valuable item. Some items are so often faked or altered that they may be almost impossible to sell without a certificate.
The process of expertisation
Experts may be individuals or committees but they will all follow a similar process to determine whether an item is genuine.
