Luxembourg prepares for the World Expo

VN:F [1.9.1_1087]
Rating: 4.8/5

The PHILALUX 2011 will be organised jointly by the ‘Federation Internationale de Philatelie (FSPL) and P&T Luxembourg. It benefits from the patronage of the Federation of European Philatelic Associations (FEPA) and is recognised by the Federation Internationale de Philatelie (FIP). The patronage of FEPA and the recognition of FIP will make PHILALUX 2011 a part of the international philatelic and cultural life and it will create new human relations and deepen existing friendships.

Philatelic exhibitions have a long tradition in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg: the first took place in 1952 and since then, roughly every 10 years, P&TLuxembourg and the FSPL have had the honor of offering to philatelists and the general public an occasion to celebrate the magnificent pastime that collecting postage stamps represents.

The last international exhibition of this type in Luxembourg goes back to 1998 with the organization of the JUVALUX philatelic exhibition for youths which exhibitors present at the time still remember today. (read more)

Do you know who was the first ever stamp collector?

VN:F [1.9.1_1087]
Rating: 4.8/5

As we all know by now, Great Britain issued the first adhesive postage stamp to prepay for the delivery of mail on May 6, 1840. Postage stamps were the idea of Sir Rowland Hill, as part of Great Britain’s introduction of standardized postal rates. The first postage stamp, commonly referred to as the “Penny Black”, helped eliminate a number of problems that the British Post Office had experienced up to that date. The idea of prepaying for delivery of mail was so successful that by 1860 more than 70 countries were using postage stamps.

Well, despite the amount of articles and stories that have been made about Sir Rowland Hill, stamp collecting in general and about rare stamps, not many people have been named as the first ever stamp collector.

However, when stamp collecting began as a hobby, probably in 1840 or 1841, there were only three issues to collect – the Penny Black, Two-penny Blue and Penny Red, all British so the British were no doubt not only the inventors of the first stamp but also the creators of philately.

People started to collect stamps soon after the first GB issues were released. One day in 1840 (read more)

VN:F [1.9.1_1087]
