Last year, Canadian Geographic, in partnership with the Canadian Museum of Nature, invited Canadians to compete in five categories for their second Wildlife Photography of the Year contest. The winning snapshots, chosen from more than 6,400 submissions (up from 5,500 in 2008), were published in the magazine’s annual Wildlife issue (December 2009); included in a traveling exhibition organized by the Museum of Nature; and featured on a set of five stamps. “The partnership is a perfect fit,” says Jim Phillips, Director of Stamp Services at Canada Post. “It’s a great opportunity to show Canada what we’re made of.” (read more)

WORLD’S FIRST FOR FINLAND

Finnish stamps go green, and when we say green we mean 100% green!

New stamps will be issued in Finland on May 4. The themes include being green, joyful moments in spring and summer, the World Fair, and sculptures. There will be a stamp booklet, a miniature sheet, and individual stamps. Moreover, a new personalized stamp frame will be published.

A magnificent set will be issued by the UN on the 6th May 2010, the United Nations Postal Administration will issue six se-tenant mini-sheets of four stamps each (for a total of 24 commemorative stamps) on the theme “One Planet, One Ocean”, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the International Oceanographic Commission (IOC). International Year of Biodiversity

On 15 April 2010, the United Nations Postal Administration will issue two new Geneva definitive stamps and two new Vienna definitive stamps on the theme “International Year of Biodiversity”. UNPA will issue two more New York definitive stamps on 18 October 2010 to complete the set of six definitive stamps on the topic.

The United Nations declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity. The purpose of the International Year is to raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity and the consequences of its loss.

Endangered Species

On 15 April 2010, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) will issue a set of 12 stamps depicting endangered species. These will be the eighteenth set of stamps in UNPA’s multi-year Endangered Species series. The series was launched on 3 March 1993 to highlight the need for the protection of endangered species throughout the world. This year the endangered species feature a variety of plants, cacti and trees. (read more)

Climate change stamps (Sinking Island)

The new set of Papuea New Guinea stamps feature images of the Carteret Island, also known as the ‘Sinking Island’ by the locals.

The Carteret Island is part of Papua New Guinea located 86 kilometres northeast of Bougainville in the South Pacific at 4°45′S, 155°24′E. Carteret Atoll incorporates a scattering of low lying islands in a horseshoe shape stretching around 30 kilometers in north-south direction, with a total land area of 0.6 square kilometers and a maximum elevation of 1.5 meters above sea level.

50 Years of Madeira’s Botanical Gardens

Since the 17th century Madeira Island had been waiting for a botanical garden, a dream that came true in 1960. Now 50 years later, the garden has received the great honour of having a set of stamps issued…

 Located 3 km from the centre of Funchal at Quinta do Bom Sucesso – a private Quinta belonging to the Reid’s family – where the climatic conditions are much in favour of exuberant vegetation.

The Botanical Garden boasts harmonious forms, contrasting colours and more than 2000 plants. It is government owned and, apart from being a beautiful place of leisure, it also serves as a Science and Culture Centre.
Throughout the gardens visitors can find the plants labelled with their scientific names, common name and origin. (read more)
