New Stamp for irregular shaped cards and envelopes

The U.S. Postal Service announced the first in a new series of postage stamps that will make it easier for card customers to know how much postage to put on their envelopes. The new 64-cent Butterfly stamp is designed to be used on cards that have an irregular shape that require additional postage.
Participating manufacturers will print a silhouette image of a butterfly on their envelopes, which will start to appear in retail stores in mid-summer, making it easy for customers to understand the new butterfly stamp or equivalent postage is all that is needed to mail the card.

Gross donates over $17 million to charity from philatelic sales in 3 years

PIMCO’s Bill Gross, manager of the world’s largest mutual fund, sold USD 1.5 million worth of his rare European stamps on Wednesday to benefit Doctors Without Borders.
A pair of 1849 French stamps, with one of them printed upside down, drew the biggest single bid of USD 190,000 from an unknown buyer during an auction in New York. Only four such “tete-beche” pairs are known to be in mint condition.
Gross, founder and co-chief investment officer of Pacific Investment Management Co (PIMCO), a unit of Munich-based insurer Allianz, Europe’s biggest insurer, has held on to the collection for about 15 years, he said.
”I’m selling my fabulous French and French colonies collection,” Gross said prior to the auction. “I’m parting with old friends but for a good cause.” (read more)

IOM issues new King George V stamps

The Isle of man has reelased a new set of stamps commemorating the Centenary of King George V acsension to the Throne.
George V was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 1910 until his death in 1936. He was the first British monarch of the House of Windsor. Although he occasionally toured the British Empire, George preferred to stay at home with his stamp collection and lived, what later biographers would consider, a dull life because of its conventionality.

The life of Pope John Paul II through stamps

Wadowice, small city of about 20,000 some 30 miles southwest of Krakov, has got international recognition as the birthplace of Pope John Paul II. Born in 1920 as Karol Wojtyla, the future Pontiff lived in Wadowice till 1938 when he moved to Krakow to study at its ancient Jagiellonian University. Yet to his last days the late Holy Father remembered fondly his Wadowice youth and places associated with it, the schoolmates, his teachers, and other local folks he had used to know. This is a Swedish stamp which exists only because a boy rescued it from his grandmothers dust bin. This stamp dates back to the year 1855 and was used in 1857. This was the only stamp which was painted yellow, obviuosly by mistake. All other stamps were actually green in colour. This difference made it such a special and expensive stamp. (read more)

In the summer of 1940, the German Luftwaffe attempted to win air superiority over southern Britain and the English Channel by attacking coastal convoys and bombing radar stations along the south coast, installations of the British aircraft industry, and RAF airfields. This ensuing conflict came to be known as the Battle of Britain.
There were undoubtedly many brave service personnel who should be remembered as heroes of the Battle of Britain. Our celebratory stamp issue features two memorable participants namely Pilot Keith Gilman and Sir Douglas Bader.
