The artist selected by P&TLuxembourg to illustrate this theme is Luxembourg artist Muriel Moritz. Born in 1976 in Luxembourg, Muriel Moritz earned in 1999 a diploma in Illustration and Cartooning at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Bruxelles. Since 1996, she has developed a solid reputation as an illustrator of children’s books, schoolbooks, as well as for her exhibitions. Muriel Moritz organizes workshops for children at the Luxembourg summer academy (CEPA) and at the Kulturhuef Grevenmacher. EUROPA competition

Gibraltar Philatelic receives the prestigious ISO 9001

One outstanding piece of news for the Gibraltar Philatelic Bureau is that it has achieved the ISO: 9001:2008 certification. “The international organisation for Standardisation (ISO) was established in 1947 and is (currently) an association of approximate 157 members representing their own country. The ISO certificates gives an organisation an opportunity to increase value to their activities and improve their performance continually” (read more)

Unique South African sign language on stamps

The South African Post Office has issued a set of stamps on the 29th January 2010 “hand signs” for a unique South African sign language. Taxi hand signs have been dubbed South Africa’s 12th official language. This is because of the millions of commuters that use this unwritten language to indicate taxi drivers where they wish to go.

Stamp for retreating glaciers

Amazing Stamp for retreating glaciers by the Swiss Post
As part of an international campaign, the current issue includes a stamp with the motto “Preserve the glaciers”.
Featuring the Morteratsch glacier in Canton Graubünden, this stamp has been issued to highlight the damaging effect that rising temperatures are having on these great sheets of ice. (read more)

Lifelong collector appointed to stamp selection committee

Postmaster General John Potter announced the appointment of Janet Klug, the former president and current member of the board of directors of the American Philatelic Society, to serve on the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC). Klug will join the committee in April.
Klug, a lifelong stamp collector who says she “never met a stamp she didn’t like,” is the current chair of the New Initiatives Committee on the Smithsonian National Postal Museum’s Council of Philatelists. “Janet brings a wealth of expertise and knowledge to the committee,” said Potter. “She represents one of the many voices of the stamp collecting community and we welcome her to CSAC.”

Ireland celebrates St Patrick’s day

St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland is one of Christianity’s most widely known figures. He was born in Britain to wealthy parents near the end of the fourth century. At the age of 16, Patrick was taken prisoner and transported to Ireland where he spent 6 years in captivity. During this time he worked as a shepherd before later escaping back to Britain.
One night he had a dream of a visit from an angel. The dream had such a profound impact on him that he returned to Ireland as a missionary where he worked to convert Irish people to Christianity. (read more)

Endangered Species

On 15 April 2010, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) will issue a set of 12 stamps depicting endangered species. These will be the eighteenth set of stamps in UNPA’s multi-year Endangered Species series. The series was launched on 3 March 1993 to highlight the need for the protection of endangered species throughout the world. This year the endangered species feature a variety of plants, cacti and trees. (read more)

Rolex Masters in Monte Carlo

MONTE CARLO ROLEX MASTERS
The Monte Carlo Rolex Masters tennis tournament will be held from April 10 to 18, 2010 in the prestigious setting of the Monte-Carlo Country Club.

Republic of Cyprus turns 50

The stamps issued by Cyprus Post commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus, a major celebration for the mediterranean island which is a tourist hotspot for people around the world.
The stamps were issued on the 3rd February 2010 amidst great publicity by the Philatelic Services
On August 16, 1960, Cyprus attained independence after an agreement in Zurich and London between the United Kingdom, Greece and Turkey. The UK retained two sovereign bases in Akrotiri and Dhekelia while government posts and public offices were allocated by ethnic quotas giving the minority Turks a permanent veto, 30% in parliament and administration, and granting the 3 mother-states guarantor rights. Spain celebrates the preseidency of the EU
