The Penny Black (wikipedia)

VN:F [1.9.1_1087]
Rating: 4.8/5

The Penny Black was the world’s first adhesive postage stamp used in a public postal system. It was issued by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland on 1 May, 1840, for use from 6 May of that year. All London post offices received official issues of the new stamps but other offices throughout the United Kingdom did not, continuing to accept postage payments in cash only for a period. VN:F [1.9.1_1087]
Rating: 3.9/5

Children’s Books is the theme for this year’s Europa stamps, which are issued by the members of the Posteurop postal organization. The Swedish stamps honor two female children’s book authors who are separated by three-quarters of a century but share similarities in their writing styles, Elsa Beskow (1874-1953) and Lena Anderson (1939-).

“I would say that Lena Anderson is a modern version of Elsa Beskow. Both want to entertain their readers while still teaching their young readers a lesson. They expertly weave together artistry, storytelling and pedagogics,” says Cecilia Östlund, senior librarian at the Swedish Institution for Children’s Books in Stockholm. (read more)
