African Stamps honour famous Jewish fighters of Apartheid in S. Africa.
Three African nations have simultaneously issued a set of three commemorative postal sheets honoring the most famous Jewish fighters of Apartheid in South Africa.
“This stamp issue acknowledges the extraordinary sacrifices made by Jews to the liberation of their African brethren, and these stamps recognize some of the most significant contributors to global humanity in the 20th century,” reads the text on one of the commemorative sheets.
In the release, Liberia issued stamps honoring Helen Suzman, Eli Weinberg, Esther Barsel and Hymie Barsel. The stamps from Sierra Leone show Yetta Barenblatt, Ray Alexander Simons, Baruch Hirson and Norma Kitson, while the Gambian sheet offers Ruth First, Hilda Bernstein, Lionel “Rusty” Bernstein and Ronald Segal.
As part of the celebration, Liberia, Gambia and Sierra Leone have also created the websitelegendaryheroesofafrica.com, where the stamps can be purchased online and includes pictures of the stamps, bios on the twelve Jews honored.
