Thailand Post yesterday kicked off “Bangkok 2010″, one of the biggest stamp exhibitions in Asia-Pacific, featuring the world’s first and only stamps decorated with 12 genuine diamonds weighing a total of 1.2 carats.

“The fair, which will be the biggest of its kind in Thailand, will demonstrate the great potential of Thailand to host world-class exhibitions for postage and collective stamps. The event is expected to be accepted widely by stamp collectors and lovers throughout the world,” president Ormsin Chivapruck said.

The fair will be held from August 4-12 at the Plenary Hall of the |Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre.

The event, which is expected to attract more than 200,000 visitors, both local and foreign, is supported by the Philatelists Association of Thailand and the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau.

Ormsin said the heart-shaped stamps decorated with real diamonds had been specially made to commemorate the 60th Royal Wedding Anniversary, and would be presented to His Majesty the King.

Another highlight of “Bangkok 2010″ is the world’s first postage stamps made from Thai silk.

The Thai silk stamps had been created to celebrate the grand opening of “Bangkok 2010″. About 20,000 stamps had been produced, consuming nearly 5,500 metres of Thai silk.

The peacock emblem was graciously granted by Her Majesty the Queen to serve as a guarantee of the quality of Thai silk being used as stamp material.

Anusra Chittmittrapap, senior executive vice president for marketing and business development at Thailand Post, said the fair would showcase postage and collective stamps from all around the world, particularly those made with breakthrough technologies. Among them are stamps with sand and bead textures, fragrance stamps, three-dimension stamps, stamps printed with disappearing ink, and talking stamps.
